  1. If you are looking for tourist railroads and excursion trains to ride the below link lists most found throughout the country.

  2. Both TRAINS Magazine and Railfan & Railroad Magazine put out a nice annual listing of train rides.  They likely will send you the list if you call or email them.  The editor for TRAINS is Jim Wrinn and he's a huge supporter of these family rides.  The editor of Railfan & Railroad is Steve Barry and equally helpful.  The 1880s Train is probably one of the best for familys, but other famous ones are the Durango & Silverton, Toltec & Cumbras, and the steam train that goes from Williams AZ to the Grand Canyon.  There are some good steam engine rides on the East Coast as well, including East Broad Top and Steam Town.  In Iowa the Boone & Scenic is a very nice ride that is great for families.  There are plenty of rides pulled by vintage diesel engines too, but most  have more modern cars than the 1880 Train.  One of these runs at the bottom of Royal Gorge in Colorado, and I highly recommend it too.  If you want to get really adventurous, there is the Yukon & White Pass Railroad in southeast Alaska.  They mostly run an interesting old diesel, but do a few steam runs every year.  The scenery is a killer!  Reno Nevada has a great steam operation too.
