Question:

Need help for a very weedy slope?

I have a large slope with ornamental trees, fruit trees, shrubs, roses but also lots of weeds. Tried pulling out but can't keep up with it the growth. What weed killer can I use without harming the trees, shrubs, fruit trees and how can I keep them away. This a large area and very slopy. A pre-emergent (Preen) would wash away down the hill, right? Can't mulch because would just fall down to the bottom of hill. I have seen landscapers spray some green powder on weeds, is that available. HELP!

  1. Get a sprayer and some weed killer. Spray the weed killer on the weeds - it won't harm the other plants so long as you don't get too much spray on the leaves. It is to late for pre-emergent. If you use a dry weed killer, do it while the weeds are wet. It is the contact with the leaf surface that kills the weeds.

  2. Only use RoundUp or something with the same active ingredient (glyphosate).  This will prevent leeching and possible damage to the surrounding plants.  You still need to be careful of your over spay because it can damage the wanted plants if you hit their foliage while treating.  Next spring, start by putting down some Preen to help prevent some of the annual weeds and grasses from popping back up.

  3. I suggest Round Up weed killer.  It kills all plants but is harmless to mature bushes and trees.  After all it the weeds are dead you can cover the ground with black plastic which is inexpensive.  You can also plant ivy or a creeping juniper that will grow to cover the whole area no matter how large it is.
