Any experts on animal dental formulas out there? I need some help on this one:

i 3/3, c 1/1, pm 4/4, m 2/3 x2 = 42

Can anyone tell me what that means? I need to replicate a set of molars for this animal. Thank you.

  1. for upper jaw:

    3/3 i means total of 6 incisors(left jaw and right jaw)

    1/1 c means total of 2 canine teeth(left jaw and right jaw)

    4/4 pm means total of 8 premolar teeth(left jaw and right jaw)

    2/3 m means total of 5 molar teeth(2in left jaw and 3 in right jaw)

    total no. of teeth=6+2+8+5=21 teeth

    for lower jaw:

    x2 means that there are two set of jaws:upper jaw and lower jaw

    .

    no. of teeth in lower jaw is same as given in upper jaw{described above}

    total no. of teeth =21+21 teeth=42 teeth

    hope this helps!!!

  2. Dental formula is for arrangement of teeth on each half of both the jaws.
