  1. My teacher had me do wide arm circles (one arm at a time) for several minutes at the start of each lesson. Also, riding with one hand behind you resting on the horse's back. And then riding with hands on hips. She said these were to help with balance. All were done at a walk.

Once I got my post down right, I didn't have to do them any more.

  2. leg leg leg use your legs

  3. I would try lengthening your stirrups, allowing you to wrap your legs around the horse more. You wont be able to rise as high either which is good until you have established your balance. You should also remember that it is more a case of lifting your peliv up and forward rather than just upright, and ensure your feels are down so you dont tip forward :)

  4. Maybe ask for a horse with a smoother trot until you get the hang of it more.  I am going to assume you are riding english.  Hold onto the horse with your inner thigh and keep you leg flat against the horse.  Do not squeeze with your calves..just have them against the horse.  I would master the sitting trot before the rising, as it is less muscle work.  Move your hips with the horse - exaggerate if you have to.  Keep your heels down and put weight in them, but so not be tense...keep your body relaxed..take deep breaths and stay calm.  For the rising you are doing basically the same thing except whenever the horse takes a step, you are using your thighs to push you just a bit out of the saddle.  Your heels should still be down and your hands steady.  Look straight ahead of you.

    Good luck

  5. you could try and take up other sports that help wtih balance.....sometimes it just helps to take a slow trot...and then get the horse/pony moving faster until ur comfortable.....lengthening stirrups help to!

  6. Hi I had i am having the same probleme with my rising trot, but as for the sitting trot, it is really simple, just grib to the saddle with the top of your legs, it really helps, looking forward helps, and also dont hold onto the top of the saddle, (pommel) because it puts you off balance, and stops you from doing anything if your horse spooks during the trot.

  7. I had the same problem when i started riding, but i have found that letting the horses movement push you out of the saddle rather than you pushing your self out. Also if you really lock your knees and thighs into the saddle, and keep your heels down so they kinda work as a shock absorber.

    I hope this helps!

  8. hey! glad to hear that youve taken an intrest in horses!

when doing rising trot, the most important thing is to look where youre going. keep your shoulders back and your head up. its surprising how the position of your head can alter your balance! also, you must remember to breathe. if you hold your breath, to tense up and go stiff, which will affect your balance.

if you do feel wobbly, then hold onto the pommel of the saddle. dont balance yourself by pulling on the reins, this will hurt the horses mouth. you could try doing some work without stirrups as this is great for improving balance. if this doesnt help you, ask your instructor to put you on a steady horse, such as a schoolmaster, who is reliable and comfy. this will give you confidence as well as being slightly easier to balance on. wrap your legs around the horse as if hugging him with your legs.

remember, if you dont ride often, then you cant expect to progress immediatley! practise your rising trot at home (no matter how silly you look) the arm of the sofa is perfect , and im sure youll be progressing in no time!#

    good luck and have fun!

  9. its something you have to work on to build up leg muscle... i would recommend some bareback

  10. Is the trot to fast for you? If so, try to slow down your horse's trot. Try to stay balanced in your saddle. Can you do the sitting trot well? If not, start there and work your way up to the point where you have to post to the trot. Remember, if the trot is to slow it is hard to rise to the trot, and if the trot is to fast it is hard to keep your balance and post. If yo ride english, it is hard to keep your legs still because of the stirrups and the thin stirrup leathers.

Keep working on your balance, and you should get it soon!

    Good luck!
