Question:

Need help getting my outboard running?

I have an old 12hp Sea King that is from the late 1960's that came with a boat that my father and I bought. The outboard runs but it is ruff running. I do not have an owners manual to go by. I was wondering where I could find one or if someone has any idea if I need to add oil to the gas to make it a mixture. This is our first outboard that we have owned so any advice would be appreciated. Please and thankyou

  1. Sea King is a trade name. So it could be manufactured by several companies. I believe it was marketed by Mongomery Ward  and the name followed Chrysler boats around for a while. The hint is the 12 hp. So it is probably an early Chrysler. That would make the points setting .20. and the carb very simple to clean. no real surprises unless the brass float has sunk. You might be able to match the water pump by comparison with a sympathetic shop supervisor. The oil mix would be 1x25. This age motor is right on the edge of the switch to roller crank shaft. Some were brass bushings and some were full caged rollers. With out seeing them, you should go with the "double" oil. You are about to find out how much real advancement has been made in outboards in the almost 50 years since they made that motor.
