Question:

Need help getting rid of mould in windows?

I have aluminium blinds, sheers and thermal curtains on my window. All this to help cut out the bright sun early in the morning and heat (in summer) and the cold out in winter.

My problem is that now it's winter and very cold, when I open the curtains in the morning 1/2 the window is covered in condensation which has caused a lot of mould to cover the alum blinds and is creeping onto the ceiling. I am allergic to mould and need it removed.

What is the best way to do this? I have heard tea tree oil used on a damp cloth is supposed to clean it off and stop it returning. Is this true? If not what else can I use? It's a big window and I dont want to have to keep cleaning it every month, being a time-poor single mother of 3.

Should I roll the blinds up and just use the sheers/curtains to allow the window to 'breathe' and dry up the moisture faster?

Any suggestions most welcome.

  1. I would use bleach to clean up the mold and kill any spores.  Light is the best way to prevent the mold from returning, so if you could keep the blind open during the day it would be a help.

  2. Tea tree oil does work and is natural so YAY, 3 drops per cupful of water, spray on,wipe off and yep you must air windows out especially with lined curtains and metal blinds.  You could also use vineagar it also removes mould but tea tree smells better!

It is winter here too so I am guessing you are a skip? Oi Oi Oi!!!

  3. tea tree oil is a powerful natural antifungal and extremely effective in removing the evidence of mold, as well as inhibiting regrowth.  While bleach is commonly recommended, it is far more toxic to use as well as can cause discoloration and deterioration of any wood, paint and fabric which comes into contact.

Use 2 tsp tea tree oil to 2 cups water in a spray bottle for a stronger solution to combat areas noticible mold growth, or 1 tsp tea tree oil to 2 cups for as a regular-use antiviral/antifungal spray for surfaces such as countertops, shower areas or places you wish to discourage possible growth or re-growth of mold and mildew.

  4. bleach.... we had the same problem and the only thing that worked was bleach

  5. clean the area with bleach water use clorox not the generic stuff 50/50 mixture
