  1. Sometimes they get dusty on the inside, or a small insect or spider can get inside.  I have a hardwired system, and when it goes off, it can wake up the dead.  I pop them open and clean the insides, my system has some components that can be removed and rinsed.

  2. If it just randomly starts beaping, it would be a good idea to get a new battery.  Otherwise if it beeps when there is say toast in the toaster or steam from the bathroom it would be best to take a newspaper or towel and wave it back and forth under the detector.  They are so finiky sometimes its crazy, but in an emergency they can save your life.  It would be a good idea if you must to suffer through it.  If you can't stand the smoke detector at all try getting a new one.

  3. FIRST check that there is no fire anywhere!  If not, it probably is warning you to change the battery.

  4. If it chirping like a cricket, it means the battery has worn down and needs to be replaced.

  5. Pop out the battery.

  6. If it beeps just once in awhile, you know, at fairly long intervals and a single beep, it needs a new battery,  If that isn't it and it beeps continually, Cover it so no air gets to it. If it stops, there is something in the air doing it. If it don`t stop, take out the battery ,  MAYBE needs a new alarm. ????

  7. Completely replace the smoke alarm system unit every 10 years.

If using battery-powered alarms, batteries should be replaced at least once a year.
