I ride at Island Motocross on Long Island NY. I have a 1994 honda xr100 and I need help with my step ups some times i dont get enough power and dont make it up or my front tires slams into the hill after I go off the jump on the bottom of the hill. Thier is a very large jump I have trouble making it up how can I make it up easyer. Also how can I learn to keep my foot up on the pegs when turning. Here are some videos of the track and look for the step up and the one big jump in the corner it has a tunel under it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4YWN3L2a7w

  1. Try winding out in a lower gear on your approach and don't upshift till after you land the jump. Keep your weight back vs forward to keep the front wheel up. You may have to practice on smaller jumps to get the feel.

As for feet on the pegs: practice. Find a good place to make a small oval, start slow and keep going a little faster each time around. When the rear starts to slide, keep on the gas. Force yourself to stay on the pegs. There is a place for putting your foot out (not necessarily down). Right now you are doing it out of fear of low-siding. You should be doing it to shift weight into the turn, which keeps the bike more upright, which means you get through the turn faster.

You are just overcoming some common riding fears. Don't let anyone give you grief for doing riding drills (seemingly stupid, repetitious,  and sometimes slow practice of simple handling). You will be a MUCH better rider for it. Build skill and you can pass anywhere in the corners, not just the inside.

Try winding out your gears more before approaching the big jump. You might not be in the powerband.  Your XR should do okay unless it is worn out. The ones  we rode when I was a kid weren't even close technologically and we (eventually) were able to handle the type of course shown without problem.

  2. Am afraid I will have to agree with the other answerers and say that I would not even really bother to give advice on how to jump this bike further or higher as it is not designed for it.  You will most likely crack the frame if you have not already done so and will more than likely end up hurting yourself as the suspension is just not set up to absorb the impact of jumping.

Get a crf150r as No Religion and Chris have suggested and then ask about how to jump it.

  3. an XR100 as good a bike as it is ... was never meant to be jumped or raced.... you need to look into a trur motocross bike like the CRF150R (not F) or a 2 stroke 85. trail bikes on a motocross track are slow at best unsafe in the worst conditions....

  4. lol get a new bike an xr100 aint meant to do jumps like that, get an 85, or a 125 two stroke or a crf150r, or any crf,yzf,kxf,rm-z 250f four stroke
