If you're American, that won't be easy. You will need an agent first as many Japanese landlords won't rent to a non-Japanese. You will probably have to pay 2 or 3 months rent in advance. Plus 'key money'. Key money amounts to a bribe to the landlord to allow you to rent the place. This can be another month or two months rent.

  You don't say how long or what kind of place you want. Most rentals are short term.
