  1. Design whatever size cage you're going to make but I'd suggest using increments of 4' as the sides or height because wire mesh comes that size.  Plan out the dimensions you'll want.

Home Depot sells 1/2 by 1/2 inch wire mesh off of 4' wide rolls.  You pay for it by the foot and they cut it off the roll for you.  (The most expensive mesh is stainless steel but it's also the safest for birds.  Not so sure about the safety of galvanized but it's cheaper.)  They also sell the wood that'll become the edges of the cage in 8' lengths.  Confine your design to using these sizes and you'll have far less work.

Next you need a tool Home Depot sells that's like a heavy-duty stapler.  Push the staples through the wire mesh into the wood frame to make it enclosed.  (Cut the wire mesh where you need to make the end of each side with wire cutters or bend the mesh around each corner).  No hammering or wood screws will be involved and it's quicker, especially if you mess up and have to reattach section.  The hardest part of the whole project is making a door on hinges, etc.  I made a 4'x 8' rectangular cage in 1-2 days that works fine in tornado emergencies in the basement for keeping the birds safe or holding them while I clean their cages with the pressure washer.

It makes a decent cage for far less than a store-bought cage would cost.  I think I spent less than $40.
