Hi there. My extended family and I (6 people) are planning on going on a road trip this week from early Thursday morning until Monday afternoon. We originally wanted to go to the south, but it seems like a tropical storm is coming that way. Now we want to go northeast of NY like CT, RI, MA, NH, and Lake George, NY.

Can you help suggest locations in these states and the best route to do the most in 4 days? Our ages range from 10 to 58, so we want to make sure everyone is satisfied.

Thanks!!

  1. This link below isn't so much an answer to your question, but a model of how easy it is to plan a road trip using Google maps.  I don't know you enough to know if you're the bed and breakfast type, the touristy type who want to do the Paul Revere stuff or just beachin' it.  The route I made is 11 hours to make the loop, so 5 hours in the car each day would really get you to a lot of places.

You could do the old AAA trip-tic. route too...

  3. Hi...

the trip that you are wanting to do is trying to cover 5 states in 4 days; which will be very difficult; i dont know if you live here/have visited these areas before; or are completely new to the notheast

so what you have to do is identify the places you want to see the most. By NY, i am assuming you are starting from new york city.

Thursday Morning: Drive to Lake George, NY (approx 3-4 hrs); get there late morning. Spend rest of day in that area; there are lots of outdoors things to do; spend night hotel or camping here - whatever you prefer

Friday morning: drive from Lake George to Boston MA (take I-90 East -- appox 3 hrs) Spend the rest of the day sightseeing the city of Boston, MA; be sure to visit the most important places first because you're on a tight schedule (boston tea party etc etc) Stay Friday Night in Boston.

Saturday morning: Drive from Boston - north to New Hampshire: a great place to visit is the White Mountains it's a very beautiful area. -- should take around 2 hours. Mount Washington is here; its the tallest mountain in the appalachians at 6000ft; you can actually drive up the mountain (a rather precarious road - but will be worth it) there is also a gondola type thing that takes you up but its very expensive especially for 6 people. RETURN to Boston that evening and stay Saturday night in your hotel as well. Enjoy boston by night if you do not get back too late/ if your family is up to it.

Sunday: it's really up to you. You may wish to go to Cape Cod - which is around 2 hours drive from boston, and spend a more relaxing day. Or visit Martha's vineyard (a scenic island in the region). You should plan on spending the night in the area for the best experience - don't drive back north to boston for the night it will be way to stressful; especially for the kids and the older people.

Monday morning, drive back from Massachusetss (cape cod area) south to NYC (plan on leaving early); on I-95 through RI and CT. Stop where you want depending on how late you are willing to arrive in new york. One suggested stop would be Mystic Seaport, in Mystic, Connecticut. Allow around 2-3 hours to see this; all ages will enjoy. Try to get to mystic as early as you can so that you can leave early afternoon and try to get back to NY late afternoon (this may take longer than expected as I-95 is choke full with traffic).

Good luck on your journey and I hope this helps. Email me if you have any other questions.
