I have a cat that has an abcessed tooth. She is currently on clavamox and pain medication. Vet will not do surgery until she has completed 10 days on the antibiotic. I am needing advice on what to give her to eat. She has been offered wet food but either does not want or can not eat this. Any ideas on what I can give her to eat. I am thinking of a puree' using a syringe? All serious reponses will be appreciated. Thanks.

  1. i would puree and let him drink from a bowl. kitty milkshake. im sure it hurts to chew, but he should be able to lap.

mix in kitten formula to make it liquid and taste better.

also, add the water from tuna fish for liquid , taste and smell.

  2. Whenever I can not get my cat to eat with bad teeth or after surgery I offer them tuna fish in water. They love to l**k the water off and usually start to eat the tuna. Also can try some boiled chicken cut up and mushed up they love that also. If not see what the vet says. Between the tooth and the meds she feels like c**p Im sure. Good luck. Be careful if you use a syringe that you dont choke her. Plus cats dont like their mouths touched very much.

  3. Believe it or not what helped my kitty when she fell ill was meaty gerber baby food with an eye dropper. It worked.

  4. You have to watch her. Clavamox can cause vomiting. It is a good antibiotic, but some animals can't tolerate it. It can also cause her to lose her appetite.

I agree with the others. Try tuna pureed with the water it's packed in. Cats won't usually turn down tuna.

  5. Whatever happens, you have to make sure she eats. Cats have to eat at least every twentyfour hours or their stomachs could flip and kill them. When I worked at a vet clinic we'd often just put the wet cat food in a syringe and force feed it if the cat wouldn't eat. She might spit it out, she might put up a fight, but the important thing is to just get something in that empty belly of hers. Once she starts feeling better she should start eating on her own.

  6. One extra thing to try - sprinkling parmesan cheese on the wet food.

Sometimes if a cat is in pain, they just won't eat, whether the pain is in the mouth or not, so it's pretty normal for the cat to just want to sit and do nothing.  If that's the case, I would just let the cat have some quiet space... and keep offering small portions.

Sometimes antibiotics cause an upset stomach, making me lose my appetite, so I'm sure that cats are the same....

Poor little girl. I hope she's better soon.
