  1. A fish would work great in the waves you have.  About a lesson.  I suggest you take an advanced lesson.  Don't know about your area but there are a number of schools around that offer advanced lessons.  The advanced lessons at my school cover primarily competitive techniques, techniques for creating a fluid style, and also trick surfing.  Advanced lessons are private and taught in the lineup.  The main problem you have is that most schools have instructors who haven't judged contests and probably can't show you how to do what they teach.  Ask the school if they offer advanced lessons, ask about the instructors experience and skills, and then watch the instructor surf.  Also, go watch a local contest so you know what advanced skills might look like.
