I graduated from high school a little over a year ago. I have been trying to get a job, and for a little while i was babysitting. I was going to wait until i had enough money for a community college, seeing as it would be easier to go there before going to a university.

My question is, should i just go ahead and apply to hcc? In which case, i need to hurry up and get my transcripts before school ends. Or should wait another year, and apply then?

And what do i do about money? Tuition is like $3000, and i don't have job. I know, get a job. I've been trying. But when you live in a city like Tampa, it's hard as h**l.

  1. You should first file your FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov and include the school code for the school(s) you wish to attend.  At a minimum you would be eligible to borrow $3500 in Stafford loan funding in your first year, which would cover your tuition alone.  You may also be eligible for Pell grant funding, which would be determined through applying through the FAFSA.

Make an appointment with their financial aid office to discuss these issues and they can give you better details on your eligibility once you have filed the FAFSA.  Choosing a community college for the first two years is an excellent way to get started and not over pay for your education.  Smart choice!

Check with their Admissions office about applying this year versus next year.  They can help you understand any hurdles required in getting admitted, but there should still be enough time.  If you wait another year try and save up some extra money for when you start to pay for your books or other school related expenses you may have.  Go when you feel you are ready.
