Question:

Need help selling Russian Blue kittens?

My russian blue cat had her 4th litter. The kittens are going on 4 weeks. I was preparing to advertise them needing good homes. When I ran across a bunch of sites that were selling russian blue cats for $575-$700 per kitten. I read on looking for the information about how to be a breeder. One site said that you have to have your cats registered as being full blood for at least three generations. And get their first shots, ect. So my question is, how would i go about being a 'back yard' breeder? Can i still sell my cats for a decent amount of money without them being registered...without having written proof of their breed. It is obvious that they are russian blues. Though not full. They have the rings that fade when they get older. all gray haired, green eyes. Would anyone be willing to pay for them?! Help. Oh, and is it illegal to sell them unpapered? Or is the only worry I have going to be finding someone willing to pay for them when they aren't?

  1. Personally, I think it's time to have her fixed.  The more litters she has, the more her health is in danger.  There are so many unwanted kittens and cats in shelters that even though it's nice to have a money making cat, it's just not responsible if you don't have a business plan.  If you still insist on running a breeding program, join a breeders association and get the information you need from them.  They aren't your competition, they are your business associates.  It's not illegal to sell unlicensed cats, as long as you advertise that way - but it is however being an irresponsible owner.  I'd have your female fixed.

  2. put adds in the paper and flyers in local vets and rescues

  3. In essence, a Russian Blue cat is only a pure Russian Blue cat when you have a registered and legal pedigree paper saying so. Also, you say that  the kittens are not full Russian Blue pedigree, so in this instance you cannot, for ethical reasons, sell and advertise the kittens for sale as full Russian Blues. The general public are quite savvy about what they know and want when they are specifically looking for a pedigree cat as they will be looking for full pedigree papers that have been issued by TICA, CFA ACFA or other legitimate international cat governing bodies, breeder/new owner contracts which guarantee the health and upbringing of the kitten to be vet checked, vaccinated, wormed, house trained and some people even ask that the kitten is already and correctly microchipped and neutered. (All this costs hundreds of dollars per kitten).

because your kittens are not full Russian Blue, they are basically a mixed breed and not a pure breed, so you cannot charge for rehoming them, except for a nominal amount so that you are guaranteeing the kittens a good home as people who want to give a kitten a good home will pay a nominal fee. This is a good way of making sure the kittens don't go to abusive homes or used for things worse like laboratory experimentation kittens.

The world has enough BYB breeders contributing to the overpopulation of unwanted kittens and cats, so do your Russian Blue girl a favour for her healthwise and you from the trouble of kitten home hunting and get her spayed asap.

PS I am a registered breeder of Maine Coons and I would never breed any of my Maine Coon girls to any other breed. This is unethical and you are not doing the breed any favours by diluting the breed pedigree. The whole point of being an ethical breeder is to maintain and improve that particular breed's health, temperament and conformation.

Leave breeding to those who know how to do it correctly and ethically!!

  4. You should always charge something, no matter how inexpensively, like 30.00, for your kittens. Otherwise people without means will adopt a kitten and not have the money for future care. Where do you live? Maybe some YA posters would be interested.

  5. In order to be a recognized breeder of full blooded cats, your cat CANNOT have bred with another species of cat. That is considered 'dilution' of the purebreds.

No one will pay that amount of money for halfbreed cats who have no papers indicating lineage that is traceable.

Cats that are PURE Russian Blues do not have the rings on them that are common to mixed breed cats like a tomcat.

Your best bet is to see if your local veterinarians would help you place them into homes where love of cats is more important than pedigree charts.

    Good luck.

  6. Please have your cat neutered immediately.  You are not a breeder, your cat is not registered and you have no right to try to sell these kittens as Russian Blues.  What you are trying to do is not right.  The right thing to do is to find good, loving homes for these kittens and not worry about getting paid.

Many people strive for years and become reputable breeders.  They have earned the right to consider themselves a breeder.  People who take advantage ruin the cat fancy.

  7. you can stil sell them be truthful about them not being a full breed

  8. I am not clear, as to weather the parents are registered Russian Blues.  To register the kittens, the parents would have to be registered in CFA or TICA.

To get the prices that RB's go for, the kittens would have to be registered. No one is going to pay $700 for an unregistered RB kitten, no matter what they look like.

And you cannot advertise them as registered Russian Blues, if they are not.  People will ask, if they are registered,  and they will ask to see the parents papers.

You can advertise them as Russian Blues, but again, people will ask if they are registered, and when they see the price you are asking, or when you tell them the price, they will expect them to be registered. So, basicly, in my opinion, you are wasting your time to ask $700,  for unregistered RB's.

I have a friend that gets over $1000 for her Russian Blues, but these are registered kittens, that come from Championship parents that have been shown.

You have to be able to prove, per say, why you feel your kittens are worth, what you are asking, as in, what have the parents done, have the parents been shown, what titles/championships have they won.  The better the parents have done at shows, the more the kittens are worth.

A registered Russian Blue, that is not show quality, or the parents have not been shown, or are not show quality, is worth, ball park $200.

So I guess the key here is, are the parents registered? can you register the kittens, have the parents been shown? What have they done in the show ring?

Not trying to be mean, just trying to give you the facts as to how it works.  :-)

Don't know anything about how to become a registered cattery, but gave you a link, that should help you, or you can contact CFA.

Hope this helps, and best of luck. :-)

  9. Registered kittens from ethical breeders sell for hundreds of dollars - these are kittens who's parents have earned points and titles in the show ring.  Your kittens aren't really Russian Blues - they are possible mixes, or what rescues refer to as "look alikes".  I'm sorry, but your kittens are no more valuable than any that someone would find in a shelter.  You already are a Back Yard Breeder, and that is NOT a good thing.   You aren't going to make that kind of money selling unpedigreed, unregistered cats.  Sorry.  You'll be better off spaying your female, and finding a better money making scheme.

  10. try advertising in vets surgeries and newspapers i don't t think its necessary to have papers as it may be obvious they are russian blues try it and see

  11. I don't think you would get enough money to justify breeding them if they're not full-blooded. You'd end up with a bunch of kittens with no homes to go to and there are already so many cats and kittens in shelters and on the streets with no loving homes. Please have your russian blue cat spayed. Four litters is really too many litters for one cat to have. Even breeders don't make their cats have that many kittens because it's a real strain on their bodies.

  12. Please get your cat spayed. Spayed or neutered animals live longer, behave better, are at less risk for certain diseases and don't contribute to animal over-population. You can sell the kittens though as non-papered Russian Blue mixes. Since they can't be pure bred if you don't know the father was. Charge about $60-$100 for kittens like this and be sure to ask adopters for references to make sure the kittens get a good home. Please don't be a irresponsible pet owner and take care of your pets. Good luck.

  13. A Russian Blue, or any breed, can only BE a "Russian Blue" or whatever, if it has the legal registered pedigree to prove this fact.  A cat is not a breed just because he or she looks like one, and even if two pedigrees are mated to produce "pure" kittens, unless the kittens are registered, there is only word of mouth that they came from this mating and as regsitering is not so difficult or expensive, and makes the huge difference, frankly, any "breed" is ONLY a "breed" if it comes with the correct legal paperwork. Here, in UK, kittens must have had full course of vaccinations, be wormed and vet checked, have full papers etc - it is actually very straightforward and works for the wellbeing of the cats and kittens, which is THe most important thing. Breeding any animal is a moral and actual responsibility, and sadly too many sickly creatures, unwanted creatures and creatures with genetic or other faults result.  How would you, say, feel, if you were made to produce children purely for money, with no choice in the matter ... chuckles!
