  1. http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/learni...

Check that website out, it works about the same for all setups.

  2. Surround sound consists of the following 5 speakers plus a sub-woofer. Front left, front center (your main dialog speaker), front right, and 1-4 surround speakers placed behind you. The link supplied to the Crutchfield site is a good place to start. You can also check out the Dolby site and the DTS site to get the official version of how surround sound speakers should be placed. One thing you do NOT want to do is just place them up high in the corners! Your main speakers (LF, CF, RF) should be placed in an arc at the same distance from your listening position and at ear level. It is far less critical where you place the surround speakers.

The best place to place a sub is to put the sub in your listening position and crawl around the room on your hands and knees listening for the smoothest bass response. Note that smoothest does not mean loudest, nor does it mean quietest. The bass will be louder near walls and much louder near corners. What you want to listen for is an open, not echoic, clear sound. You will probably find a place along a wall part way from the end of the wall. That is the place to put your sub-woofer. If there is not enough bass move it closer to a corner. If there is too much move it toward the middle of the wall, or into the room. I hope this helps some.
