  1. Start by hooking up the speakers, hook in a CD player or a DVD player and make sure you can get sound.

Then tell us how you think you are feeding the TV sound to the receiver.

  2. you may need to setup the settings, look for options on the remote that say DTS, DOLBY etc...

    Or something called MODE's

Are you getting sound out of any of the speakers?? The only reason i mention is I own a pioneer amp and I can remember when i set it up i did a re-setup of the speakers 5 times before realising I hadnt turned it up loud enough!!!

Another option is make sure the rear ones are turned up via the speaker setup option and that you have the right size selected speaker wise

Im only mentioning this as a pioneer amp user, just a few options

  3. The problem is not in your equipment but in the way TV is broadcasting sound. Regular TV is broadcast at best in 2.0 channels not 5.1 So you won't get any sound in your surround speakers.  To help with this problem , I suggest that you change your listening mode from Dolby Digital to Dolby Pro Logic l or ll. This will change your 2.0 into 4.0 or 5.1 if your have Logic ll, and you should have some sounds in your rear speakers. Now HDTV is being broadcast in 5.1 .
