Need help teaching dog not to bark on everything?

How can I stop this? If she's sleeping, and she heard something, like a car horn or someone walking pass by our door, she'd wake up and bark at that. And she wouldn't stop barking. I don't even know what I should do to stop her. When I carry her away (she's a Pomeranian btw), and I let go of her somewhere around the house, she'd run back to the door and continue barking. She just keeps on barking on everything! Sometimes, I don't even know what she's barking about. She just runs toward the door and barks. (She has a small window below the door where she can see the outside)

When we come home, she used to just peek at us, now, she barks at us too.

What should I do? I don't want her to bark and get that noisy like that forever. (She's only 8 months now)

  1. I vote for the spray bottle. I have found a spray or two or so works well for some dogs for disciplinary matters. I currently have a 2 month old puppy and I have used the spray bottle to deter him from chasing/antagonizing my cats. It has worked well.

If you do have to consider a no bark collar, I would suggest trying a citroen no bark collar. I've seen it work on a rather passionate barking airedale and within a couple of uses all that was necessary was for him to see the collar and he would stop the barking. If the scent is bothersome it comes in an odorless form as well. I think the hissing sound it makes when the dog barks as well as the spray itself combines for the deterrent effect. These collars are readily available at the bigger commercial pet stores. You will probably get a better price and selection buying online, and definitely check out ebay prices.

Hopefully a more passive approach will work but if not, the collar may be a possibility for you. Good luck.

  2. distraction,  give her a tidbit for being quiet and some say, a jet of a waterspray once, only when she barks or buy the 'clicker' aid too , if she barks  say 'NO' and then give her  a treat , then she will associate not barking with a small reward. divert her attention.

some dogs are very anxious, and need dog therapy as she is insecure. consult a vet for help. some dogs are very excitable , she needs less stimulation, close the curtains so she cant see out to bark.

dogs often can form a habit out of boredom has she enough walks and enough toys? they often are stimulated by SIGHT so lessen what she sees from the house windows and she should not bark if she cannot see anything worthwhile to bark at or get excited about!

    good luck

  3. I had the same problems with my husky, and my grandfather's Pomeranian.

There are a couple of ways you can try. One way is to hold her mouth closed and scold her whenever she barks. A simple hand around her muzzle - Gently! - and a firm "No!" should work. When she quiets down say "Good girl" and give her a treat of some sort.

Is she is really serious and won't stop you can do something extreme. Its called a shock collar, and it shocks her lightly when ever she barks. I used it on my husky, and it worked.

Another way is to put her in a cage. That will at least keep her from going to the door. Keep her in a room away from the door, and stay with her. When she starts barking at something scold her; Anyway that works for you.

Another way is a water bottle. Squirt her with a water bottle whenever she starts barking. Or loud noises. I don't recommend yelling at her or scaring her in any way, but I found that yelling, waving your arms around and banging scares the animal into being quiet. Yelling is only a very last resort though, don't yell at her unless you've tried everything. I know some of these things sound a little violent or cruel, but they all work in one way or another.

  4. maybe one of those anti bark collars?
