  1. I used the Graco Snugride for my daughter, it's the best one I have used. Brand new they are about $70-$80, but I also found the Evenflo Discovery 5-point Harness Infant carseat which runs about $40-$50, very safe and handy as well. We had the 2 different ones in each of our cars. 1 in mine and 1 in his. Congratulations on your baby. The link is at the bottom, I bought both of mine for Target. Good Luck

  2. Chicco gets fabulous consumer reports.  If you go onto BabysRus.com, you can read customer reports.  My sister had a Graco.  Her one year old son was able to pick at the foam underneath the cover and was checking while she was on the highway.  She had to swerve off the highway and stick her fingers down his throat to pull it out.  It ended up being recalled....

There is also a book out there called Baby Bargains.  You can look up different things baby's need and read the reports on the different manufacturers.  Its a great book.

  3. I like Graco fine make sure you get one with an adjustable harness so it's easier to get baby in and out. I have also used a Brittax I got a great deal on on-line and a g/f of mine loves her Chicco. They all have good ratings and if you're not sure do a search for car seat safety ratings, the government rates them according to safety and ease of use.

    Good luck!

  4. I like Graco for infant seats. They are easy and safe.

  5. We have used the Briax seats, and recommend them to everyone.  They are a bit pricey but have the added protection of side-impact wings, adhere to higher standards than regular car seats, are super easy to install, and accommodate children in a harnessed position for longer than other seats. Our carseat can keep our children in it up to 80lbs.

Just remember rear facing is safest, and if possible should be done for longer than 1 year and 25lbs.  Also, keep your child harnessed as long as possible.  Most states say that you can put a child in a booster seat at 4 yo or 40 lbs, but a carseat is safest hands down.  And unfortunately the seatbelt can fail easily when using a booster.

  6. I had a Safety 1st travel system.  I am very happy with Safety 1st products.  I find them very well built and longer lasting than Graco.  The infant carrier from this sytem was very sturdy and easy to remove from the base in the car, but it was HUGE and bulky.

I ended up borrowing an Evenflo infant carrier from my sister.  This was way smaller and easier to use.  The "bucket" part of the seat seemed deeper as opposed to longer.  It fit into my car better because of that.

I don't know what kind of car you drive, but I recommend you try the infant seat in the car.  Some of them are very long (including Graco).

I bought a Safety 1st convertible carseat for my daughter when she went front facing.  I am very happy with it, and it's good up to 100 pounds.

  7. I prefer the Graco Snugride.

While it does have a lower weight range than the SafeSeat (22 pounds vs. 30),  it also weighs less (7.5 pounds vs. 9.8 pounds). It gets heavy to me awfully quick and I move them rear-facing in a convertible seat by 20 pounds anyway.
