I entered a traffic circle (which had three exits) from an interstate highway exit while on left most lane. At the entry of the circle, the left most lane divides into two lanes and ultimately becomes three lane circle. The left most lane is marked for “left only”, the middle one marked for “straight” and “left only” and the right most marked for “right only”. Since I wanted to go straight, I turned on my right turn signal and slow down a bit (20mph to 17mph) to show my intention to move to the right lane. I was constantly looking at the passenger side mirror to see the traffic flow in the middle lane and as soon as it was safe to change the lane, I moved to the right and went straight ahead. Meanwhile a cop, waiting to enter the circle, saw me changing the lanes and pulled me over. He handed me the ticket for “Failure to turn on marked traffic course”.

I also want to emphasize that

(1) The lanes were separated by dotted lines and

(2) There are no signs which say “LEFT TURN MUST

  1. To go straight, you should have entered the right lane upon entering the traffic circle.  From there you would have had the choice to stay there and go straight or turn left, or enter the right lane to go right.  But since you entered on the left, you were left turn only.  Sorry.  Pay the ticket.
