  1. Follow the signs to the Underground station (Kings Cross St Pancras). Buy a ticket - you want a zone 1 single (or return); if you're an adult paying cash, then it'll cost you £4. You can either queue up and use the manned ticket office, or use one of the ticket machines - there are two types, the big ones with a key for all the main stations (press the "Waterloo" one, and adult or child single or return, then pay however much it asks you for - I think they take notes as well as coins), and the small ones with just the zone you want to travel in and the type of ticket (coins only, I think).

Take your ticket and go through the automatic gates - put the ticket in the slot at the front right hand side of the gate, and pick it up from the slot at the top. Then follow the signs for the Piccadilly line and go to the WESTBOUND platform (or it might say southbound at that point, in any case the route diagrams on the wall opposite the platform will show Heathrow as the end of the line). Get on a train that's going to Heathrow, Uxbridge, or Northfields, and get off 6 minutes later at Leicester Square.

Then follow the signs for the Northern Line and go to the SOUTHBOUND platform. Get on a train that's going to Kennington, and get off 4 minutes later at Waterloo. Follow the signs to the exit (probably to the concourse of Waterloo station).

  2. It is so easy :

Just get a map of the London underground system. Every station shows a color. If the station from which you begin is the same color as the station to which you are going, you simply stay on  that line, for example, yellow or brown (which by the way is the Waterloo line).

Right now get a free map of all the stations by logging on to www.google.com and typing :

UK+london tube map      and hit enter

Increase size to 75 % and print it out if you like.

That same site has complete instruction as to where you buy a ticket and it tells you how to by an "oyster" which means you can travel without a ticket until your credit runs out on the card. Cheaper than buying a single fare.

Londoners are the kindest people on earth. If you stood outside Kings Cross and asked almost anyone where you bought tickets etc, they will gladly tell you.

  3. There are signs everywhere!  The Tube is just about the easiest subway in the world to use!  Everything is color coded, the signs are easy to spot from about a block away, and there are maps EVERYWHERE!

For a look at a map, try searching the London Underground.
