Ok i badly need help with this guys

I play afl at the moment im only about 156cm tall sooo very short i can kick about 30m and i want to improve on that distance i just dont know how?

If someone could provide me with details of i guess the mechanics of a kick and then go through how to improve distance i would greatly appreciate it.

Also , as i am very small i am not a big presence on the ground. How can i make myself a better presence on the ground considering my size. I would like to become stronger but not look like a man (yes i am a girl incase you were wondering)

Thanks heaps

  1. I'd say concentrate on what your assets are as opposed to trying to make yourself into someone else.

A small player should have fantastic agility/evasive skills, acceleration, quick and accurate disposal, a good ability to get into position to crumb the ball off the packs...work on these skills.

Some great small players have made it to the highest level - Brad Gotch (Fitzroy - 166 cm), Tony Buhagiar (Essendon - 174 cm), Neville Bruns (Geelong - 172 cm), Richard Loveridge (Hawthorn - 173 cm), Jim Krakouer (North Melbourne - 170 cm), Dale Weightman (Richmond - 170 cm).

  2. First of all you play Aussie Rules, not AFL. If you played AFL you would be part of one of the 16 teams in the top comp. Thirty metres isn't too bad if you're playing in a girls' league. Strength shouldn't really make a difference to the distance of yoour kick, it's technique that counts. The best advice I can give you is to make sure you follow through with the kick as much as possible, that should improve the distance.

    Hope this helps =)

  3. Get a longer run up.

  4. Get on the roids.... that'll do the trick

  5. This is a good, detailed article about the mechanics of kicking. Well worth a read for you:  http://www.rugby.com.au/verve/_resources...

  6. If you can't improve buy using the general motion you could just experiment with your run-up, kicking action and the strranth you use when kicking the ball. Sooner or later you will find something that works for you.

  7. chances are that you will never be able to kick much longer than 30m, maybe with practising with the right technique you could perhaps kick 35m.

the best advice would be to practice the accuracy of your kicking, and practice kicking with your non-preferred foot.

the best way to improve your presence on the ground would be to improve your fitness and stamina so that you can get to the ball and be able to support your teamates and tackle and bump the opposition players as often as possible.

many top afl/vfl players including brownlow medallists (the highest individual award) were not good or long kicks but were able to compensate by improving in other areas of their games.

personally i was never able to kick more than 40m at best despite playing and practicing for many years so i developed my ability to kick with reasonable accuracy and distance with my 'other' foot and always would try to signal to my teammates to come closer if i intended to kick to them.

you could try practicing the torpedo punt, which is renowned for achieving greater distance but it is a difficult kick to master and often leads to errors.

  8. Practice kicking, you will get better.

I can only get 40m and i am a bit taller than you but i have strong thighs from cycling too much. So build up your leg strenght and practice technique.

Follow through on your kicking and giv it your all. practice makes pefect. go onto an oval and boot the ball with your brother/friend/sister. Just keep practicing!
