I just got a kitten from someone off of craigslist...and she refuses to eat or drink anything but milk, and they said that she was 8wks old but she seems younger than that. They also claimed that she was already on dry food! I have no idea how to wean her off of the milk, I've never given any of my cats milk because I heard somewhere that it gives them diahrea? So if anyone has any advice at all please help me asap!

Thank you for your time! =)

  1. Milk does not have the nutrients needed to support a growing kitten. A kitten fed solely milk will starve to death even though you are feeding it. The diat change needs to take place today.

Start with some yummy canned food, warmed up if necessry. And don't be afraid to smear it on kittens lips so he HAS to tast it and see that it's good.

  2. get some kitten chow or other kitten formula, and soak it in the milk - after lapping up the excess milk, the cat will start eating the dry (but now soggy) food. just start putting in less milk and more dry food over a month or two, depending on how much of the soggy dry stuff it starts eating. (In behavioral terms, its called 'shaping' or 'fading')

Don't leave this just setting out though unless you like the smell of sour milk!!

And there are free cat clinics/ or cheap ones,  - try going to one and get it its shots and they should also give you a better idea of its real age.

  3. Maybe she doesnt like the type of food you gave her. I had the same problem with my cat. Try getting her different brands until she finds one she likes. Maybe you could give her some canned food and then work her in into dry food. And yes, an all milk diet will give anyone diarrhea!

  4. if you feel your kitty needs milk just buy the kitten replacement milk..... cows milk is bad for kitties I had a vet tell me that cats are lactos intolerant .. mix the dry food with the kitten replacement mild

  5. you could try,

    1.weetabix

    2.shredded wheat

    3.soggy bread

    all mixed with water

or you could try and literally spoon feed ur kitten with a teaspoon, with normal cat food (meat of course) chicken worked best for me, you can try other flavors.

also try dippin ur kittens face into the bowl and then she'll have to l**k it off, she may get a taste for it that way.

you could put a tiny bit on ur finger and place it on her nose... theres a few things to try.. good luck!

  6. Just DON'T give it, she'll get hungry and eat and drink H20 only:)  And you are correct it'll cause diarrhea and dehydration.  Very bad for kitten...   Best of luck and enjoy your new little one.
