Question:

Need help - what do you think?

I took a pregnancy test on Friday 8/15 and it said pregnant. I'm about 2.5 - 3 weeks late on my period and started having some spotting (only while wiping and dark brown color) and tightness in my abdomen this weekend. I called the doctor and went in for an ultrasound today. The doctor said she could not see anything on the ultrasound and ordered full blood work. She has now given me the following options regarding the pregnancy:

1. Ectopic pregnancy

2. Conception date later than originally thought and what I'm experiencing now is implantation bleeding. (this would mean the baby is too small to be seen on an ultrasound yet)

3. I have already miscarried

I should have the test results back later today, but I'm driving myself nuts. I haven't passed anything and spotting just started this weekend. She's hoping the Hcg levels will show something: high meaning ectopic, and low meaning very early in pregnancy/miscarriage. If they're low, how do will I know which it is? If it's high, then what?

What do you think? I don't think I could have had a miscarriage - wouldn't that involve more bleeding and passing tissue?

Please help, I'm driving myself nuts! This is my first pregnancy.

  1. I had an ectopic pregnancy and they have to remove it. It depends on how far you are, if it's early on they can give you a chemical that will sort of dissolve the tissue so it can pass through your tubes. If your farther along they have to go in surgically and remove it before it ruptures your tube.

I don't think it would have been a miscarriage because you should have bled more and had some clotting.

It could be that you just aren't as far along and the baby is still to small.

    Best of luck to you.

  2. Unfortunately, you are going to have to wait for test results to know for sure.  But, it sounds to me more like options 2 or 3.  Ectopic pregnancy is usually very painful though, so I wouldn't worry to much about that.  Early miscarriage can start off by passing some of the older blood and then turn brighter and heavier as it progresses.  Good luck and I hope everything works out for you!

  3. If low and you are still not passing anything like clots or bleeding, they will take your blood again in a couple of days.  If the HCG levels go up than you are in early pregnancy, if they go down than you are miscarrying.  If high, than you will have another ultrasound to ensure it is in fact ectopic than you will undergo a procedure to remove the pregnancy as ectopics are life threatening to you.  If you have had a miscarriage, it can take a few days to a week to expell the tissue.  Nothing to do but hope for the best and wait for the results.  Best of luck to you.

  4. Your doctor should tell you what your blood levels mean.  I know when I had a chemical pregnancy that my doctor told me when he called with my results that he suspected an chemical pregnancy.  I wish you the best of luck.
