  1. The verb is perhaps the most important part of the sentence. A verb or compound verb asserts something about the subject of the sentence and express actions, events, or states of being. The verb or compound verb is the critical element of the predicate of a sentence.

In each of the following sentences, the verb or compound verb is IN CAPITALS:

Dracula BITES his victims on the neck.

The verb "bites" describes the action Dracula takes.

In early October, Giselle WILL PLANT twenty tulip bulbs.

Here the compound verb "will plant" describes an action that will take place in the future.

My first teacher WAS Miss Crawford, but I remember the janitor Mr. Weatherbee more vividly.

In this sentence, the verb "was" (the simple past tense of "is") identifies a particular person and the verb "remembered" describes a mental action.

Karl Creelman bicycled around the world in 1899, but his diaries and his bicycle WERE DESTROYED.

In this sentence, the compound verb "were destroyed" describes an action which took place in the past.

  2. The first answer you got is absolutely correct, but some of the sentences are a little tricky, like number 3.  Jennifer is dressed in a red jumper, the verb in the sentence is "is".  Jennifer isn't physically doing something but the word is tells us Jennifer's "state" for lack of a better word.

  3. Verb-Its what you do!

  4.   1. are going (swimming is a gerund -looks like a verb, but is a noun) - present progressive action verb

      2.  flew   - past tense action verb

      3.  is - present tense linking verb

      4. was - past tense linking verb

      5. was - past tense linking (founded is the predicate adjective)

  5. a verb is an action thing like RUNNING SKIPPING JUMPING. anything that has to do with ACTION.    like swimming flying. etc. get it now? so whatever the person is DOING thats a verb

  6. A verb is an action, like she is >>running<< to the store. Hope this helps.

  7. A verb is a word that usually denotes an action (bring, read), an occurrence (decompose, glitter), or a state of being (exist, stand).

Here are the verbs in the following sentences:

    1. going

    2. flew

    3. dressed

    4. was

    5. was
