Question:

Need help with 2 household problems - how can I save my toilet seat and how can I fix a sticky door??

Ever since I used some bleach to clean my toilet seat, the white varnish is corroding into black, unless there's another underlying cause. How can I fix this?

Also, my front door is "sticky". I have to pull hard on it to open, like it's stuck or doesn't fit the door frame or something. Any recommendations with how to correct that?

  1. Buy a new toilet seat.  They're only about $15..  Sorry - can't help with the door.  Perhaps it's shifted and needs to be levelled and rehung?

  2. toilet seat will have to be replaced you bleached the finish right off.  As for the door try sanding it down where it sticks

  3. No clue on the toilet question...maybe just try 2000 flushes to keep it white all the time.

Sticky doors are usually made of wood...the wood swells and makes the doors difficult to open & close.  Try looking at the door to see if there is any new rub marks on it.  If so, that's where you will have to sand it down a little at a  time until it closes easily.  Another reason may be loose hinges, the pressure of the weight of the door wears on these...check them out and tighten any loose screws.

    Good Luck!

  4. Re-levelled and rehung is one possibility,if it has swelled it might be to big for the frame, planing would be the answer.

  5. afraid toilet seat is a gonna best replace

as for door smear margarine or greece into jamb and along front edge (where latch opens)  you could plane the wood but when wood returns to it's former state door wont close due to gap

when it is wet or humid or above temperature wood swells much like railway sleepers do

  6. I would buy another toilet seat ($10 at Home Depot). It's always good to have something new.

As far as the door, check the henge's and make sure they are tight. Some times they can become loose. Check it both at the door and the wall.
