I have a 4yr old boy that won't pee as much as he should. He is not sick, he is healthy. Would it have anything to do with him missing his dad? Every time i ask him if he needs to pee he says no but i take him to the bathroom and he does not pee at all. The last time he peed was last night. Can someone please give me some advice or any ideas on how to get him to pee?

Thanks in advance.

  1. CALL THE DOCTOR! My sister had this problem with her kid and the dehydration was a problem and my neice ended up in the hospital with an IV. Call your doctor and talk to the doctor on call for the evening. Ask them what to do. Don't wait, you can call your pediatrician's office and the answering machine  or answering service will page the doctor for you. good luck.  He is too young to wait until the morning. Call now.

  2. Have your tried pushing more fluids into him?  He sounds dehydrated?  Anytime he goes for more than 16 hours without urinating, call your doc.

  3. Look at his gums, and make sure they are pink.  Also, slightly pull/pinch the skin on the back of the hand and make sure it doesn't keep a wrinkle.  Both of these are signs of dehydration.

Also, make sure he doesn't hurt in his abdomen by slightly pushing on it.  Take his temperature and make sure he doesn't have a fever, and make sure his fingers and ankles don't have swelling, as that could be a sign that his kidneys have problems.  Are you sure he's not experimenting and going somewhere else?  Little boys sometimes discover they can, and then they do.  It shouldn't be because he misses his dad, although the fact that he misses him may have caused him to lose appetite for food and drink.

Apple juice might help him.  Sometimes, with elevated levels of sugar in the body, it causes a reaction of the kidneys to screen fluids and produce urine.  If he doesn't go by in the morning, I'd take him to the doctor.

  4. Is it possible he could be peeing outside? My son does that all the time, he is 4 also.  Boys dont want to be bothered by the inconvenience of stopping play for something as mundane as peeing. Seriously though, if he is not going outside, it could be something serious, better safe than sorry!

  5. Hi there!

How much is "a lot" of fluids? If his kidney's are otherwise healthy, he should be making at least 1ml of fluid for each kilogram of body weight each hour (a 44 lb child = 20 kg = 20ml/hour nominal). He should have a bladder capacity to go 2-3 hours without needing to pee, and should be able to hold it for about 3-4 hours.

If he is getting adequate fluid and not making urine, he should be evaluated to ensure his kidneys and urinary tract are functioning properly. Even if he were to try to hold it, eventually the body takes over and releases the bladder.

Does he go potty privately, and just not tell you? Could he be peeing in the flower pots? (don't laugh - I knew a child who did this, he didn't want to go all the way to the potty to pee so he just "pee'd in the bushes in the house" as he put it) Is he embarrassed by peeing in front of others? Is his lack of voiding a new development? Did he produce many wet diapers as a baby? Has he had many accidents since being potty trained?

Sorry for so many questions, but this could be a serious matter. Keep a diary or log of how much he drinks and how often (and how much) he pee's. You can estimate the voids - "pee'd really quick" or "went for a few seconds", it is just a general idea.

    Good luck!!!

  6. CALL UR DOCTOR. Dont waste time here, nobody is a paedetrician over here...

  7. hey

take him to the doctor and get him checked.. also making peeing fun helps.. like putting a ping pong ball in the tolite and getting to try and hit it.. i dunno..

good luck...  i hope he is ok.. xx

  8. And just how much do you think he needs to urinate?  He will urniate when he needs to, leave him alone.

  9. You should take him to the doctor to see if he has a urinary tract infection. And after the doctor gives him a clean bill of health, then you can see if it's because he misses his dad. Try getting him to talk. Good luck!
