I am the Maid of Honor at my Best Friends Wedding which entitles me to making a speech.

I want to be able to write the kind of speech that has people crying at first and laughing in the end.

If anybody has any deep sentiments and funny quotes together that I might be able to use as a guide or any ideas at all I would appreciate it.

  1. First introduce yourself--name, MOH, and personal relationship.  Go with a personal story.  Something that shares how close you and the bride (or groom, you didn't say) are.  Then go into something sweet.  The first time you saw them together.  Or how you knew they were right for each other the first time she came back from a lunch date--at 9pm that night.  Something that explains how perfect they are together.  What traits they bring out in each other.

As for laughter at the end, I like some of the famous love toasts.  There are a lot of Irish poems.  Or quotes from famous people.  Might be a good idea to pick up a book on quotes.  Then you can go through and write down whatever might be appropriate.  Limiting them as needed.  My experiences says finding quotes on the internet is not only difficult, a waste of time, but also lacking in accuracy.  Grab a book and you could end with a funny story of her as a child.  Something her parents tell over and over again.  And end with some quote about Hope you have 4 just like you.  Or if she was an angel, tell her the problem with being a perfect little angel growing up is you may end up with kids fulfilling a curse when your husband was little.  And on that note--the best man has some stories he'd like to share.

Then have a nice "Raise your glass to the new Mr and Mrs" line.

  2. As the Maid of Honor, your speech mainly concerns your relationship with the Bride.

Introduce yourself to the guests at the beginning of your speech as not everyone may know who you are, thank your friend for choosing you to be her MOH. Talk about memories and or experiences you have shared, these can be humorous, or moving, explain what makes her such a good friend, how lucky the Groom is to have her and also what a great couple they make and why.

You may consider reciting an appropriate poem about friendship or marriage.

I read this poem at my friend's wedding. It's short and sweet but sums up the fact that two people coming together also brings together a wider group of families and friends.

    Marriage is the union of

A greater sum than two in love.

    Relatives are made by rites

    Relating in-laws to delights.

In bringing families and friends together,

A million lives are changed forever.

Go then in joy, yourselves to please:

    Each love shapes many destinies.

The Bride also had this printed on small cards which she attached the wedding favors.

    Finally make a toast.

(Bride) and (groom), always remember this special day. Remember how you feel right now. Let that feeling guide you through a long and happy life.

  3. Incorporate this quote:

There are three rings involved with marriage. The engagement ring, the wedding ring, and the suffering.

    ~Woody Allen

    US movie actor, comedian, & director (1935 - )

Best of luck to you and yours;)
