My husband and I are in a debate about how to score in the game of Scrabble. The question is: If there is already a word on the board and I add a letter to it to make another word and use a triple word space, would both words be tripled? For example, if he put the word banana and I used an s to make bananas while also forming the word salad and salad lands on a triple space, will salad and bananas both be tripled? Any information would be greatly appreciated!!!!

  1. No

  2. Only if the S (in your example) is placed on the triple word score.  Any bonus scoring occurs only when the tile is FIRST played, and it is scored for each word it makes or modifies.

Also,if word cover two double word scores with a play, your scor four times the word's value, and if you cover two triple word score, you get NINE times the word's value.

And if you make the the incredible play of covering THREE triple word scores, you score 27 times the word;s value.

  3. A TWS/TWS (triple word score/triple word score) is what you are talking about.  IF the letter you mention triples the word BOTH WAYS then it's a TWS/TWS, but if it only triples one or the other word then only that particular word score is tripled.

I hope this helps.  If you have any further questions contact Joe Edley at the National Scrabble Association--google it.
