  1. As a sociology student myself I suggest you read Durkheim

and then go to your library and look on the library search engine or look at amazon. Remember secularisation is a very popular subject and an issue which is in current debate.

  2. Durkheim with anomie.

    Max Weber is also interesting.

    Wikipedia will help you further

  3. Many early sociologists predicted that religion would vanish in the future as they observed the world becoming more secularized during their lifetime. Functionalists such as Saint-Simon, Comte, Spencer, etc. were positivists, meaning they believed everything could be explained with science. August Comte, who coined the term "sociology", even tried to replace religion with science and create a religion of positivism in later life.

..."Why people don't attend church"? Not everybody is a Christian - that's the obvious answer. Although 92% of the country believes in God, religious affiliation is waning rapidly (there have been many recent articles about this, for example: http://www.usatoday.com/news/religion/20... ) Do you mean to ask "why people who are Christian don't attend church"? That would be a much more appropriate question.

I know of more data and theory (esp. Durkheim) about why people who don't necessarily believe a church's theology still attend. But reasons for people who do feel close to their religion but do NOT attend church isn't as widely available.

A quick search on googlescholar turned up this article, which seems interesting: http://www.jstor.org/sici?sici=0021-8294...

I'm sure you can find many more if you search "church attendance" or "secularization" on google scholar.
