Question:

Need help with Windows XP and Drivers...?

I've recently had to reformat my computer due to a nasty virus. I was unable to locate the restore disc that came with my computer originally so I used the one that came with my Dell Laptop (please note that my desktop is a craptacular eMachine). When installed, things seem to work fine. I can access the internet and all but when it comes to playing games, all I get are error messages. Specifically I'm unable to play World of Warcraft (how lame am I?) as it tells me it is unable to find a suitable display device. I assumed this had something to do with the different restoration disc and my actual video card or driver.

I found this thing called "Driver Detective" online and it said I have 30 out of date drivers and 4 uninstalled drivers. If I pay the money to register it, will it fix my problem so that I will be able to play WoW?

If anyone can help please explain it to me in the most non technical way you can. Thank you.

  1. You need the drivers for your mother board. Do you have a video card or are you using the on board video? I know people who play WOW and the newer versions will not work with an on board video card. It might if it is a new pc. Did you install the drivers for your video card assuming that it is not on board. You can probably download the drivers for your motherboard. Go to the motherboard manufacturers site and look up the model number.

  2. Don't even think about using Driver Detective. It isn't worth it.

First of all, is your computer a Dell? If not, then what brand and model is it?

As soon as you have the model (for example, Dell Inspiron 1501), just go to the brand's website (for example, http://www.dell.com/) and lookup that model. They should have a page for Drivers from which you can retrieve all the necessary chipset, audio, ethernet, wifi, etc drivers from. :)
