A little background: Im 19, 5'8", 165lbs., When i was in highschool i had weightlifting once a year and worked out 3 times a week and did cardio 2 times a week, throughout my 4 years i probably gained 30 lbs. and went from skinnnnnnnyyyy to having a pretty build nice looking body, well i've been out of highschool for a year and a half now, and havent hardly worked out at all, i still have a good looking body, but have lost alot of strength, and alot of my muscle mass. I go to a local gym/swimmingpool, nice facility, my question is Should i workout different parts of my body on different days? if i miss a few days a week or im not consistant will everything i did be for nothing? Is it healthy to go into the gym and workout on every machine and workout every muscle?

I try to eat carbs before i workout and i just started drinking WHEY PROTIEN shakes after my workouts, dose this help alot???

I want to get bigger but stay cut, and i want to keep my V shape around my abbs, which i want to work on showing more (which i know takes cardio as well)

and is it ok that after my workout i go into the swimming area and cooldown by alternating 5 mins in hottub then 5 in the pool then repeat (just kinda feels good lol)

haha i know this is a lot to read, and good answers will be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Question 1 Should i workout different parts of my body on different days? Yes you should. Your muscles grow in the days following your workout so you need to give them rest time to develop.

    Example:

    Day 1 Chest, bicep

    Day 2 Shoulder, back

    Day 3 Legs

Day 4 Tricep and whatever else

    Day 5 Rest

    Repeat

Question 2 if i miss a few days a week or im not consistant will everything i did be for nothing? Every workout is beneficial and can lead to gains. Don't worry about mistakes or cheating, just jump right back on track. Ultimately, you will get out of it exactly how much you put in.

Question 3 Is it healthy to go into the gym and workout on every machine and workout every muscle? I think I answered this in question 1. Don't work every muscle every day. That would be a detriment to your body.

Question 4 I try to eat carbs before i workout and i just started drinking WHEY PROTIEN shakes after my workouts, dose this help alot??? The answer, yes it does help a lot. Nutrition and what you intake will increase your gains a lot. Go to anabolicminds.com to figure out more ideas on what your diet should be in building muscle.

Question 5 and is it ok that after my workout i go into the swimming area and cooldown by alternating 5 mins in hottub then 5 in the pool then repeat (just kinda feels good lol) - Nothing wrong with this.

Be determined and you will rip it up!

  2. How many muscle groups you should work during a workout really depends on how many times you visit the gym per week. It is generally recommended to lift with a muscle group 2-3 times per week, allowing for rest between workouts. If you desire to work out more than the 2-3 days per week it is a good idea to alternate muscle groups with the different days.

As for a cool down, you should be doing something light that keeps your muscles moving.

  3. There are a few different kind of splits you can do.  Body for Life by Bill Phillips, recommends doing Three Weight training and three aerobics a week.  Upper Body, Aerobics, Lower Body, Aerobics, Upper Body, Aerobics.  Week 2, change upper for lower.  So you are doing weight training for each half of your body about every 5 days.  That gives your body time to fully recover.  It also helps prevent over-training.  So even if you only work out a body part once a week, you'll still see results, just not as fast.  Don't work out every body part every time you go.  You'll over train and can even lose muscle.

You can pick up a copy or go to www.bodyforlife.com for more specific information.

    Another split is:

Chest & Back, Legs & Abs, Triceps & Biceps & Shoulders, Rest.  Repeat.

Post workout whey protein is a good idea.  A few carbs before is fine also.  I see nothing wrong with your cool down.

  4. just workout 6 days a week focusing on different muscle groups daily...whey protein does help...the hottub and pool thing once or twice a week is ok...
