I have read that the house needs to be on a post 15 feet up but I have never seen any like that anywhere. Is it really necessary. Also, bat scent? to attract them to the house? And, how close can I get to the house to see them?

  1. I have always heard that to set up a bat house, it should be on the side of a building with a full southern or southwestern exposure.  15 feet up sounds about right, but I've never heard about putting it on a post.

As far as attracting them, well, the best thing I've heard of is bat poo.  You put the bat poo at the base of the house and on the ground directly under it so they can smell it.

And lastly, how close can you get?  Well, it depends on how much patience you have.  If you sit still, close to the bat house just before dusk, they will go right by you.  Bats don't really have a fear of humans.

  2. Check out his site for tips on placing bat houses:

Besides the proper height..it is also important that the spot you pick gets up to 10 hours of sunlight a day.
