Question:

Need help with a boat drive shaft like waterproof seal?

I need to seal a wire that moves in and out of a box under water similar to a drive shaft seal in a boat but the difference is, instead of a drive shaft its a 1/4" cable and instead of it a rotating motion the cable move's in and out. Also the cable goes out of the top of the box which cant get any water in it.

.

So what I would like to know if there are any product that can accomplish this or if there is a way to build a homemade seal.

.

thanks,

  1. If it moves than nothing will seal it under water?

If possible can you move the box to a more dryer area> If your talking about a keel trunk with a cable than use pvc or something like to make a tube higher up>

  2. I actually have a spare bellows for the alpha outdrive.  I was going to put it on ebay but if you need it shoot me an email.  Go figure, i just found it last night.

  3. In your case you need a little engineering help.  The way this works on most boats is that there is , what is in effect a hose ,that runs from the drive to a point higher than the water.  The "cable" simply runs inside the hose. It's a lot easier to put a hose connecton on the top of your box and get a hose long enough to reach out of the water, then run the cable inside the hose.Good luck!!!

  4. Try a shift cable bellows for an alpha drive from mercury.  See this link for a pic.http://ww2.sierramarine.com/sierra/catal...
