I want to shot a movie. I want to know which camera is best to shooting a feature film. I´Ive checked so many cameras but I am not yet to convince. I want something for the range of $ 1000 to 4000, but to make movies, not for broadcast, TV...just for making movies. I am not yet to familiar with HD, so I do not want that feature.

Please help me choose.

Thank you.

  1. Looking at standard defintion cameras for a feature film, my choice would be the Canon XL2 for $3,000. Antother great choice is the Panasonic AG-DVX100B for $2,500. These two camcorders were favorites of indie filmmakers (at least until HD). The reason is that they have an excellent feature indie filmmakers love called 24 Progressive Scan. Normally, digital camcorders record about 30 frames per second, while cameras that run on celluloid film record with 24 frames per second. In addition, digital picture looks a lot different than film. In order to obtain the pleasing look of film without the extra cost or hassel, 24p was developed. Its a great feature that I highly recommend for feature films.

Both the XL2 and the DVX100B have 24p, but I am slightly leaning towards the XL2 because it has interchangeable lenses as opposed to the built in lens on most cameras (like the DVX100B). By giving you the option of using different lenses, you have more freedom to manipulate zoom length as well as depth of field (how much the background and/ or foreground is in focus).

    Hope that helps.

  2. Hitachi or sony are best
