Ok so my kitten is 4 months old now, and lately he has just gone plum crazy.. He is chewing on everything... hairbows, kids toys and today when I got back home, he had chewed an electrical cord that was plugged in completely in half..I know he is just a kitten and that's what they do and he will out grow it, but I need to know if there anything I can get for him to keep him from this behavior so he doesn't electrocute himself... This is my first kitten so I really dont know what toys or what not to get him, since he is obviously teething.. Of all of the toys I have bought him, he really likes these cheesy looking mice, but please give me some advice on what to get for him...I would hate for something bad to happen....

  1. Get him a nice variety pack, that way he will not get bored with what he has. They sell different kinds of toys all in one package and that is probably your best bet. When you catch him playing with something he's not supposed to, firmly say "No" take it away, and give him one of this toys he is supposed to play with. You might even consider trying to kitten proof your house. Put the things he is most likely to play with that he shouldn't in places where he can't get them. Also, try to play with him with his toys so he knows that's what they are for. Don't forget a scratching post too. You might even want one with a cardboard center and a ball around it to play with, my cats loved those when they were little.

  2. try to leave him in a small room where theres nothing plugged in so he wont hurt himself  when ur not home, eventually hewill grow out of his craziness, just try to protect him for now

  3. I don`t know, but if you have cat nip toys or anything with cat nip in, well that can drive some cats mad. It can make some cats almost hyper. I bought my kitten a cat scratching post that has lots of strings coming off with all different pom pomms on the ends. Its like a childs activity centre and I know you pick them up quite cheap from ebay or pets at home.

Maybe try leaving your cat in a room where there isnt anything he can harm himself on, when you go out. ( easier said than done ) I hope this helps you

  4. This will sound strange but try getting another kitten.  That's probably the best toy you can get for your him.  Two kittens are really easier than one and they keep each other occupied.  Try to find one around the same age so he isn't too big and rough for it.

Also try putting away anything loose and things that might be fun to push off tables.  Push and crash is one of their favorite games.  You can buy a spray at the pet store that will make the cords taste icky-usually these are bitter-apple flavored.

Be really careful with any toys you get since most of them are dangerous.  Most toys should only be used when you are home since then you can take them away if they start falling apart.  Don't leave the kitten with any toys that have loose dangling strings or button-eyes that might pop off.

Toys that you can leave loose that cats really like are:

the round racetrack with the ball inside it

solid balls that can't be swallowed or have pieces chewed off

    catnip mice are okay usually

paper bags and cardboard boxes are great

and try to get a cat tree

And keep repeating to yourself he's four months old he's just hitting the peak of that frenzied behavior, 'he'll start calming down soon'.

  5. Thats what kittens do!

My cats LOVED playing with rubber bands, so try shooting those at him!

  6. I know what you are going through, he is a baby wanting to explore the exciting world.

First of all think of the places he goes that he shouldn't. For any cords that he might get to, you can buy a spray product called "NO" or a similar one, ( I don't recommend the organic on because it doesn't work). But cut thin strips of rags, or you can use paper towels, cut in strips, spray them with the spray and tie them around the cords, he will not like the smell and will not go near them but the smell isn't bad to us. I used this around my Christmas tree and the bottom of my curtains and my cats got trained to stay away from them. For kitchen counters or stove tops, use duct tape, tape it with the sticky side up, they hate when their feet touch the adhesive, they may jump once or twice but it will stop them. He needs a scratching pad if he doesn't have on and my cats really love the scratching pads that look like they are made out of a corrugated box, you can get them at Wal Mart.

    Have fun with your kitty.

  7. They actually become the main urge for your pet. During the teething phase their favorite objects to chew on are made out of wool. It is unclear why they prefer wool during this phase, but they get relief from sore gums when they chew on wool.

Adult teething generally takes place between three and six months of age. This stage is very stressful for your pet. Therefore, you should not be stunned if your cat accidentally bites you. Giving your pet a firm object to chew on such as a plastic or rubber toy can help relieve the pressure. If using your children's toys doesn't do the trick, you can always try special teething toys designed for kittens.

Many cat owners report a wide range of dreadful symptoms during the teething phase. For instance, your cat may have difficulty swallowing or even refuse to eat food. Under these conditions it's best to contact the veterinarian as soon as possible. You should also apply a gel or powder on the cat's gums to provide comfort and relief from his or her symptoms.

Homeopathic granules can calm your pets and enable them to eat as comfortably as possible. This will also protect the objects in your house from chewing. There is a possibility that your pet will display strange behavior patterns during the entire teething period, but the behavior should return to normal when the skin on the gums breaks.

Hope these tips help you and your new found kitten during those challenging days of teething. Rest a sure these phase doesn't go on forever, but enjoy every minute.
