  1. Usually the best kind of filters are bio filters. Its kind of like a reef in the ocean. Uses natural organisms to filter the water.

Seldom needs to be messed with.

You can make the grade from soil or stones, or most anything to generate a change of grade. Pump in the pond, with a hose running under or beside the mound of soil, stone, or what ever you are using to raise the grade.

Use a thick liner as an underlayment. Stops potential leakage. Usually have a large flat stone overhang the pond edge. The higher the drop, the louder the sound. Also the greater evaporation. Some ponds have been know to use a refill float, much like a toilet tank, to keep the water refilled. Tap water, however, has chemicals which need to sit for about 24 hours to dissipate the chemicals, in order for fish to survive. Make sure it is not too shallow. Builds up too much heat. Most plants prefer sun, but fish like some shade, which the pond plants help provide. Give the fish places to hide.

There are oxygenating plants that float in the water that help replenish the oxygen. Running water does also, and the greater splash, also adds more oxygen,  A well balanced pool will maintain itself. Good luck, and they do have classes for this.

  2. A Filter would be advisable and you can use River Rock for your Waterfall! Join it together with concrete Mortar! Good-Luck! The Mortar will have a whitish color until it ages for awhile! Good Luck! Put some Japaneses Koia in your pond, they are colorful and Hardy!

  3. Actually you need a skimmer, a bio/UV filter and pumps.

You need a  My person choice is pondmaster pumps.  They are magnetic drive rarely if ever wear out use no oil to leak into the pond only change the impellers on occasion and give a good cleaning at least once a year.

When doing your waterfall make sure to use a liner (EPDM) under the rocks/stones otherwise it will leak.  You will also need a filter falls or bio fall/open link

If you build it right you wont need any concrete.

The most import thing is to research the project

    Reason for use

BIO/UV filter:....to help maintain the good pond bacteria and the UV light is to keep your water clear from split peas soup algae.

The Skimmer: is to keep the water surface clean and circulating.

The Filter Fall/bio fall is to have the container for water storage to flow down the waterfall.

If your going to put koi in the pond

Use the Laguna aerator because they need more oxygen.
