i'm in charge of a main dish. the party is small, about 12 people.

i recently bought some very cool extra long picks. possibly five inches or half of a skewer size. they are topped with silk orchids and hibiscus. i used them a few years ago for a luau party. i fit three large pineapple chuncks and two large strawberries on each.

i would like to do something similar, especially since the guest of honor is hawaiian, too. any ideas for a main meal using these picks? i thought of ham and fruit kabobs. it has to be a cold dish. possibly some sausages? i can place them over a bed of rice or some starch that is okay cold.

i'm lost, but i have two weeks. please help.

  1. Wow, sounds like you answered your own question! My housemate's from Hawaii and eats tons of pineapple, ham, and sausage. Over a bed of rice sounds great. Otherwise, believe it or not, spam is really popular in Hawaii! My house mate eats that too. Pretty disgusting though. But you can make edible sculptures out of it!

  2. This is not a main dish but you (if all are adults)can soak fruit (large chunks) in Malibu Rum or your favorite wine for 2 to 5 days the longer the better and this is cold and good.  Mix fruit works very good.  have fun;)  ;)  ;)

  3. I would say do the same with fruit and go for a more ethnic Hawaiian dish for the main.

Too much $$?  Get someone else to help.

  4. I think your idea is right on... you could do some kabobs with all fruit and some with ham or pork.  I think it would be fine cold since alot of appetizers serve cold ham chunks.  Maybe do a mango sticky rice or a jasmine rice with coconut milk and almonds (I like sweet rice).

  5. You could put grilled chicken with mango and pineapple chunks. Serve them over a mixture of black beans and corn and drizzle italian dressing over them.

  6. Yea i think that's a good idea. I come from a hawaiian background and at most of the parties there are ham and pineapple, :) and its cold =P tastes really good. Hope this helps.

  7. Ham and pineapple is good

but have you thought of summer sauage, green pepper  (Red pepper is ok too) and a chuck of sweet Pickle

another idea is braised cooked meat (like a roast0, you could have sterno to heat with someone wants, in tradition to a hawaii feast

Try to find a sauce of two for dipping (sweet and Sour and possible a hiosen sauce)
