  1. 1/3-1/30=3/10.

    3/10 is between 1/3 and 1/4 and 3/10 is a rational number.

By the way, this is not an algebra question.

1/3>1/4, so I need to subtract from 1/3 to get something more than 1/4.

I like to use decimals for this:0.33333...-0.03333=0.3

    0.3>0.25, 0.3<0.33333333...

  2. 1/3=8/24

    1/4=6/24

    Therefore, 7/24 is between 1/3 and 1/4.

You could find an infinite number of answers using the same method, such as:

    1/3=24/72

    1/4=18/72

    Therefore, 19/72, 20/72, 21/72, etc. are all still between 1/3 and 1/4.

  3. A rational number is any number that you can write out entirely. 1/3 is equivalent to 0.3 repeating (irrational) or 0.33 if you round down and 1/4 is equivalent to 0.25 (rational) so you just need to list any number between 0.33 and and 0.25. Examples: 0.26, 0.289, etc. :)

  4. If you change them both to the smallest common denominator, twelfths, you would get 4/12 and 3/12.  Now double the denominator and change them to 24ths, and you get 8/24 and 6/24.  So, in between them is 7/24.  This method will work for any two fractions, and is easier to understand than fiddling with decimals.
