I’m taking an English class correspondence through the mail and it has been forever since I have taken English. What exactly is meant by the Theme? For instance the 1st question is: What is the epic theme of The Odyssey?

the plot is what happens, what goes on.

I never read the Odyssey, but...for instance Catcher in the Rye might be...one struggles with one's innocence in a phoney world
