Hey guys, I want to get a decent sound system in my car. I'm 16 this is my first car and I have no idea about car audio...

However me and a friend did come across a guy selling 4 12" subs for $30 a sub, we figured you really cant go wrong with a $30 sub, can you?

2 of them are MTX Thunder 8000, 400RMS/1000watt 4 ohm dual coil.

2 of them are Volfenhag A German Concept, 500RMS/1000watt 4 ohm dual coil...

Are these decent subs? We bought them for both of our cars, so we will be taking 2 each, which set should I take? What kind of boxes/amps should we get for them? How hard do you think installation will be?

Is there anything else we should be buying to get this to sound nicely? Speakers/Decks/amps, ETC.

  1. OK, generally speaking...spending $30 on a subwoofer is a good deal IF IF IF IF IF IF!...if the subs are not blown. Take the subs to your local car audio dealer and ask their installer to see if they are blown. This is quick and simple. They'll just put an Ohms meter on it for a second and tell if they're worth using.

Then ask the guy what type of box to use with them. Every subwoofer has a specific box volume needed for it to work at it's best. Too little or too much air volume could blow the sub, not just make it sound like c**p.

remember, it doesn't cost anything to ask them a question. That's what they are there for. They hope that by being as customer friendly as possible, they will gain your business.

  2. i would buy any second hand subs. because you dont know if the guy has had them flat out or they dont work. I would just go out and buy a new sub and amp. I will save you alot of trouble in the future. Young people are more vaunrable of older people ripping them off. So buy new and stay away from any second hand car audio unless you knw they person and have been in the car and heard the subs or speakers for your self.
