I'm looking thru 3 different instruction books that I have, that all have a particular instruction saying "ch 2- sp" what in the world does this mean? I know ch means chain and sp means space, but does this mean "chain TO space" or "chain 2 spaces" ? I'm so confused...please explain as simply as possible...I'm a beginner. Thanks!

  1. from what you typed at the end of your question it means to work a slip stitch into the next 2 stitches and then also in the chain 2 space which was worked in the previous row/round.

  2. Yes, the other answer is correct, but I also wanted to explain what ch-2 means.

When you see a hyphen between the ch and the number, that means it is something you've done previously. You worked 2 chains on the previous row, so when you talk about them on this row they are called ch-2. That does NOT mean that you chain 2 at this point. It means you ALREADY chained two and you  have a space there.

"slip st in next 2 dc and in next ch-2 sp" means to slip stitch into the next 2 double crochet and in that space made by the two chains of the previous row you are to also slip stitch. That means you insert your hook into the space and you will be working your stitch around the sort of horizontal post made by the two chains.

I have an explanation of ch-2 on my FAQ.
