    Basically, multiply the numerator of one fraction by the denominator of the other.

    So, in simpler terms, multiply that 56 by 1 (being a whole number, 12 can be written as 12/1 as a fraction in these situations)

    and multiply X by 12.

    once you do that, you set your products equal to each other.

    So you have 56=12x

    then, separate the "x" variable (divide both sides of the equal sign by the coefficient...12)

    so you'd get x=4.66 (or 4.7)

    or you'd get 14/3
