Need help with essay ideas

Hello,

I have to right a five page paper on the way poverty effects illiteracy, I have several key points but, was wondering if anyone had any topic suggestions? Mine are how poverty level can effect schooling, emotional stability, how hunger can effect testing and overall success rate of child, can lead to lack of role models,.... any others you can think of?

you could also talk about parenting...bcoz then usually the parents arnt educated and cnt teach or help their kids

or how kids dnt go to skul bcoz they need to earn money to eat and end up not goin and cnt now how it is to live better

People in poverty tend to function at the very basic level.  They have to concentrate on meeting survival needs such as housing, food, fiances, medical attention, clothing, child-care, transportation.  These factors heavy influence the level of literacy one is able to obtain through informal education, and formal education.

Parents and care-givers that are wrapped up in trying to meet these needs have little time to contribute to the literacy or education of their children. The priority tends to be "to survive" day by day rather than on educational needs.

In agrarian societies, literacy is only possible when a country or community's agriculture produces surplus wealth.  That is the point in a society's development when numbers and writing are invented--to count the inventory and calculate the tax.

No surplus, no counting, no writing, only scrounging out a living.  Find an African country that has some good crop years and some bad crop years and contrast the literacy rates.  Ethiopia is a good country for that b/c they had famines that have lasted for years and good stretches as well.



You can start with the web to locate Ethiopia's famine years and good years, but you are likely to find good books in the library that will give you larger blocks of the story and stats tables as well.
