Question:

Need help with finding ancestors ..

What's a good, trusted site that can help me learn about my ancestors? I want to know my background better, but the websites I have found on Google are complete garbage.

Normally, I would ask my parents, but they don't know either.

Any ideas?

  1. You need to approach all of these sites with the idea that they could be incorrect as they are submitted by other researchers.  One wrong person and everyone up from there is incorrect.  There are a lot of incorrect trees floating around because someone assumed that because person 1 with a last name lived next door to person 2 with the same last name.  DNA testing has proved that as many (or more) as 5 different branches of the same name could be living in the same state and county.

    With that said:

www.ancestry.com (the best but you have to subscribe)

    www.familysearch.org

    www.gencircles.com

    www.rootsweb.com

    http://www.census-online.com/links/

    http://www.findagrave.com/

  2. http://www.ed2go.com/ has an online course on genealogy, if you want to learn how to find about your ancestors.

  3. http://familytree.com/

  4. Ancestry.com has helped me find 9 generations on my dads side of the family

  5. I was just on ancestry.com last night for the first time and it went back to the 1400s with information about my husband's people. It really was interesting and informative to know where these people were born and who they were married to and how many children they had and the names of the whole family. You can even print out the pages you find. Some have pictures of the people, too. I think you might enjoy this site. Good luck.

  6. You could try http://www.ancestry.com if you already haven't it's a really great site
