25 year old female who just got off her parents health insurace, and now needs to get her own. I attent full time college about to graduate soon. I work part time so I can't get it through work. I don't have any health conditions but I do see the doctor about 2-3times a year for various normal health problems, but I know I need health insurance because you never know what could happen. There are so many...any suggestions?

  1. Contact a local health insurance agent (I would ask around for recommendations) to write an individual policy for you.  You are a great candidate for individual since it sounds like you are very healthy, and the rates will be extremely competitive.

If you had some conditions my recommendation would be to look for an employer who provides coverage since individual coverage can deny coverage to applicants with conditions.

I would not recommend the state pool unless you have no alternatives.  The coverage is very minimal and the premiums are ridiculously high.

    Good Luck!

  2. See if your state has a subsidized health insurance. Google it.

  3. A local agent will be able to help you find what options you have available, and be able to determine what type of coverage you need for your individual situation, including your financial situation and what you can afford. Most independent agents are very helpful and really do want to help you get what you need, as well as help you to understand what it is that is available because there are so many choices to consider and when you have no idea or no experience with Insurance it can all seem very confusing.

I'm not sure what State you are in, and each State has different rules & regulations pertaining to Insurance. I do work with quite a few different independent agents in quite a few states, so if you'd like I can possibly refer you to someone who I know will be able to help you, that is if I know someone where you live. Send me a note through my profile if you'd like to see.

Good Luck in your search and hopefully you will be able to find something that will work just right for you!

  4. Check with your college to see if they have any plans available. College plans are not expensive but then they don't have many benefits. There are also plans specifically designed for college students. If you think you'll be getting a job with benefits soon after graduation you could also look into getting a short term medical. These plans don't have all the bells and whistles of a permanent policy but will cover you for catastrophic illness and accidents. Another choice would be a permanent policy. A comprehensive policy would cover your doctor visits where some of the other options won't.

You'll want to work with a local agent that offers all the major companies in your area. You said you don't have any health conditions but you also said you have "various normal health problems". Depending on the health problems you could be declined with any policy or those problems could be ridered. A rider means that the insurance company will accept you but not cover those problems. This is where an agent will be most valuable since they can talk with the insurance companies before you apply to find out what the company may do about the problem.
