Tomorrow is the end of the week show for camp. we went over what to do for the best turned out award, but can anyone give me some tips to get my horse really clean ( where to remember to clean, what a lot of people miss, etc.)? Also, the horse i ride is great at jumping, but really rushes through grids. How can i get him to slow down in the grid? Thanks for any help!

  1. dont wash the night befor or day befor BIG TIP, get up really early say if ur events start at 8am ur up at 4 pulling mane washing with a brush start at top of horse when washing to prevent dirt sitting to long on his body (put shampoo on horse and use brush to wash works extremly well on all that stubourn dirt and dust) make sure you have a sportless show rug so its slean with no dirt, braid mane and tail do your horse make up carful if ur making a fake strar that it doesnt look to fake there is nothing worse!

pay particular attention to your mussel and eye make up if done badley just looks terrible. get your self a strapper no one person can do this all alone in four hours, dont forget ur hoof polish! right at the last min chug ur rug and float boots on and away you go! iv seen far to many girls stable there horses the night befor all done up only to find there a  MESS in the morning. this way ur ready and pretty and fresh!

  2. braid the hair it alwasy looks cute

  3. try to squese with yuor upper thighs thats what i di when i ride it will hurt a little but first is worth it

  4. Use quicksilver shampoo if you have a gray horse. A braided mane and forlock is always appreciated in the show ring, even if you don't have to. Polish the hooves. Make sure that you clean and braid before you truck out, and fix braids and do finishing touches at the show. Make sure that there are no manure stains! (I got points knocked off in a showmanship class once for a little spot on the face.) If your horse doesn't like hoses, use a soft towel or sponge to clean the face.

As far as the jumping, sit back and keep your heels down. Keep your shoulders back and head up. When he starts speeding up, pull back and push him into the bit with your legs. (My horse is a bit speedy too)

  5. Places to give extra care:

    Nose and nose boogies

    Eye Boogies

Elbow (area infront of girth where leg meets horse)

    Everything between hind legs

    Dandruff in mane and tail

Anything white needs to be cleaned with purple shampoo

I have often seen grids used to slow down horses that rush because they have to think. I would use half halts and keep your weight back before the grid and just let him ride you through it. He will figure it out.

  6. Curry, hard brush, and soft brush for 20+ minutes. Use some show sheen-remember to put on the saddle first so it doesn't slip. Hind quarters are usually dusty so remember to groom extra there. If you can give quarter markings. Painting the hooves looks nice, braid and plait the mane.Wipe the saddle and bride clean. Applying baby powder or french white(chalk) can really improve white markings.  Use cowboy magic detangler in the mane and tail

Jumping-sit back and pull back a little before the jump- keep practicing

    Good luck
