  1. It is a little difficult to provide much guidance without knowing considerably more than you have stated.  I can offer some guidance with what I do know.  Stay away from bonds.   They are poison in the current environment unless they are part of a mutual fund portfolio.  To invest in stock can offer outstanding returns, but can also present you with a great deal of risk unless you have sufficient funds to own at least 10 different stocks.  It also requires some work and knowledge of how to tell a possibly good company from a possibly bad company.

That leaves mutual funds.  For most beginning investors they present a way to invest without a great deal of knowledge or specific risk.  There are however litterally thousands to choose from.  That is where more information about you is necessary in order to direct you to possible funds that might be good candidates for investment.

You can find out much of this on your own by visiting Morningstar.com   They have a wealth of information about a lot of mutual funds including whether or not they think it is a good fund to invest in.  They also have learning tools to help you learn about mutual funds.  You find it at the bottom of the page.

    Good luck.

  2. Without having more information about your personal information, such as age, current income and other data such as risk tolerance, martial status, and demographics it would be very inappropriate for me or any other person to provide specific investment information in this type of media

There are many people just like you that are, or were looking to invest and those that did bought Mutual Funds and/or Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs).  One purpose of mutual funds is to help investors like you, who are either just entering the investment world or who have no investing experience.  Once you feel you at least have an understanding of investments you should look into ETFs which are similar to mutual funds but are traded on the exchanges.

Mutual Fund companies as well as ETFs have an entire array of products many will fit your needs. You can go to the MSN.Money website

http://moneycentral.msn.com/home.asp  it has an entire section on mutual funds and Exchange Traded Funds.  Read about the various products and in doing so you will be getting investment ideas and at the same time educating yourself about investing.

You could also contact the funds companies for more information.  I have found that Vanguard & Fidelity can meet your needs for mutual funds.  The service and information they provide is all free and you will find it helpful.

  5. Long term?  Vanguard S&P 500 index fund.

Short term?  Any major broker's money market fund.

  6. It depends on your age. I just got started in investing, i read "personal finance for dummies" and "Investing for dummies". They are two books I highly recommend before doing any investing. The reason?? If you jump into investing with out knowing what to look out for, you'll have to learn the hard way. Learn about the fees that come with investing and most importantly the state and federal taxes. The last thing you want is to invest money and not see any rewards because, most of it was taken from broker fees and taxes. The books I recommend are really easy to read and quite entertaining. You could buy a used version on Amazon. If your younger, the best thing to do is to invest in stocks, since you have time to recover your losses. Mutual funds are a good investment vehicle they allow you to diversify your stock portfolio without as much risk. Also know that their are different types of Mutual funds. Mutual funds that invest in stocks, bonds, etc.....
