Need help with math problem?

I need help with a math problem.

But first, please don't just tell me the answer. I just need help getting the equations set up and stuff.

Here's the problem.

If a rooster is worth 5 coins, a hen 3 coins, and 3 chicks together 1 coin, how many roosters, hens, and chicks, totaling 100, can be bought for 100 coins.

There are multiple answers. Find 2.

Again, I don't want the answer. I want help on how to set up this problem.

Thanks!

  1. Let the number of roosters be r, the number of hens h, and the number of chicks be c.  Then the cost for roosters will be 5r, for hens 3h, and for chicks c/3.  You have two equations:

    r + h + c = 100

    and

    5r + 3h + c/3 = 100

Since there are three unknowns but only two equations, the system is underdetermined.  That's why there are multiple answers.  Just find a set of numbers that works in both equations.  I'd suggest that you start by solving the equations simultaneously.  You can get rid of one of the variables, and it'll be easier to work with one equation in two unknowns than with two equations in three unknowns.

  2. first set a random number like 66 chicks. keep adding the number and coins of the hens and the roosters.

use alot of chicks, some hens and a rare amount of roosters.

like i said b4, if i were to hav 66 chicks, that wud equal to 22 coins.

lets say that you bought 10 roosters, equalling 50 coins.

and you have also bought 6 hens, equalling 18 coins

    20+50+18=89

    66+10+6=82

the answer i gave you was too small.

try adding more from this.. =)
