  1. One of my sons uses these short cuts too...too many text message phones!  :)

Anyhow, start with your living relatves to inquire about your ancestors.  Write everything down; use that information and go to your local public library.

Ours is a small town and has both www.ancestry.com and www.heritagequest.com, free for use (and you do NOT need a library card).

If you want to do your research at home, try these sites:

    http://www.searchforancestors.com/...

    http://www.censusrecords.net/?o_xid=2739...

    http://www.usgenweb.com/

    http://www.census.gov/

    http://www.rootsweb.com/

    http://www.ukgenweb.com/

    http://www.archives.gov/

    http://www.familysearch.org/

    http://www.accessgenealogy.com/...

    http://www.cyndislist.com/

    http://www.geni.com/

    Have fun and good luck!

    P.S.

If you are even remotely successful, it will be a lot more work than a simple term paper.  I have typed up several hundred pages; if I were to use one of those commercial genealogy programs, my computer would crash! and I have plenty of rams and roms...programs take a lot more out of a computer than using a database or word processing.

  2. I find these FREE sites very useful:

    http://www.familysearch.org/

    http://www.rootsweb.com/

    http://usgenweb.org/

    http://www.cyndislist.com/

    Good Luck!

  3. If you are willing to do as much work as it takes to write a term paper in a high school history class (A college prep class, not one the numb-numbs have to sit through to graduate), you can probably find a good deal out about your family tree for free. This question gets asked 3-14 times a day, so all you have to do is browse the resolved questions.

Based on your spelling and grammar, I don't think you have the patience. Anyone who can't write out "you" isn't going to do hours of research for fun.

  4. Of course, people can help... but start with some understanding of how research works.

www.cyndislist.com has thousands of sites for genealogy, including an excellent beginner section. Most of these are free sites.

At some point in time, genealogy does include some costs. For example, birth/death certificates are usually a critical part of research. These are NOT online.. there are indexes, in some cases. You would still need to order the full document.

You still have not asked any direct questions concerning your genealogy.  The only limitation is that you should not post private info about living persons (most reputable genealogy sites will not have that either).
